With an earlier start and a rapid development, Hengcun was listed among top 10 towns of Hangzhou based on the comprehensive economic index of industry in 2003. For the specialized industry of knitting, there are 262 enterprises, more than 500 self-employed processors, and about 20 thousand manufacturing workers. The annual production volume includes 13 thousand knitting garment made of silk, pure wool, or mixed fiber and 22 thousand dozens knitting wear as hats and neckerchiefs. The output of knitting industry achieved 2.53 billion RMB in 2003, covering 63.6% of the total industry output value of the town. Most products export to oversea markets and its annual export output is near 1.75 billion RMB. The town is known as a knitting production base for Wal-mart, Auchan, K-mart, Ann-taylor, Liz Claiborne, Marks & Spencer, Bernard Chaus and other multi-national companies.
The town also provides a competitive supporting and service environment for knitting industry as an industry district of 20 thousand mu recently-build to attract local and national knitting companies. In the future, the town will promote its industry competence by technology reform, scale expansion, brand building, and product development with the principle of development, specialty, exploration, and rural-urban interaction.
