China's cotton imports fall in July

  China imported 131,400 tons of cotton in July, representing a decrease of 22% from a month earlier, according to statistics released by China's General Administration of Customs.
  
  In the first seven months this year, China imported 866,000 tons of cotton, down 40% year on year. From Sep. 1, 2008 to Jul. 31, 2009, China imported 1.34 million tons of cotton, representing a 41% decline from the corresponding time of the previous year.
  
  However, China exported US$16.37 billion worth of textile and apparel in July, representing an increase of 17.4% from a month earlier or a 12.4% year-on-year decrease.
  
  In the first seven months this year, China exported US$89.19 billion worth of textile and apparel, down 11.2% year on year.
  
  As of the end of July, China allocated 1.87 million tons of cotton for sale from its state stockpile, and the government plans to sell more to help ease the current supply shortage.
